Teresa Guerra

My mother, Teresa Guerra, was born at her home in Zacatecas, Mexico on February 15, 1932, to Antonio and Guadalupe Castro. She would be the youngest of 6 children. Sadly, when she was only 2 years old, her mother passed away. Her sister, Carmela, who was just 13 at the time, quit school so she could take care of my mom. Later, when her sister Carmela got married, she and her husband graciously took her into their home. My mother, Teresa Guerra, was born at her home in Zacatecas, Mexico on February 15, 1932, to Antonio and Guadalupe Castro. She would be the youngest of 6 children. Sadly, when she was only 2 years old, her mother passed away. Her sister, Carmela, who was just 13 at the time, quit school so she could take care of my mom. Later, when her sister Carmela got married, she and her husband graciously took her into their home. She met my father Ruben when she walked into a café he was working at, in Los Angeles. He fell in love with her at first sight and asked her to meet him later at a dance. She agreed and then stood him up. As fate would have it, she would bump into him again. Not taking “no” for an answer, he continued to pursue her. His persistence paid off! They were married November 27, 1958. Together, they bought a home in La Puente, where they raised their 4 children: Ruben Jr., Gabriel, Araceli, and Victor. Settling into La Puente, they became active members of the community—spending countless weekends at the park where my dad coached the boys as they transformed into Little League superstars. My parents were both dedicated servants at their church. Dad became a deacon, and mom served as a CCD teacher for many years. Throughout those years, her faith in the Lord and her community of friends grew. Their home became a revolving door of visiting friends and family, and anyone that came to visit would not leave without being fed. She fed everyone! My mom loved her job as a Bilingual Aide at Nelson Elementary School. She worked for the district for 25 years, only retiring after my dad’s health began to decline. One of her favorite memories working for the district was teaching the students Ballet Folklorico dances to perform at the school’s yearly Cinco de Mayo festivals. These dances would later become a staple in many of our family gatherings as she would teach them to the grandkids and great grandkids. Afterwards, she would dress them up and there would be a big show! They loved it! Mom and Dad’s best days were spent sitting together in the living room with the TV on, watching their Dodgers win! Their marriage withstood the test of time, as they were able to celebrate 64 years of marriage before my dad passed in 2022. For one of her birthdays, my dad wrote to her, “Don’t die before me, I wouldn’t be able to live without you. You are the love of my life.” Shortly after my dad’s death, and because of her declining health, she came to live with me and my husband Jim, in Hesperia. And although I knew she missed her home in La Puente, she was always thanking us for caring for her. What a blessing it was to have her with us the last years. I am so thankful for it and will cherish all the memories of it. It was during this time that my mom would join us in our Bible Study home group. This was a precious time where, together, our faith continued to grow as our knowledge of the Lord grew. At home she would read the Bible daily and would write pages and pages of notes in preparation for our next bible study meeting. I treasure these notes. She loved going to church, and the church family that embraced her from the first day she stepped through the doors. Her weekly highlight was the coffee and donut fellowship after every service, but especially the potlucks! At home, every morning would begin with a phone conversation with one of her closest friends, Cuquita. During the day, she enjoyed sitting outside under the shade tree in her little garden area, talking to her niece Licha on the phone, watching the chickens, and picking up leaves. But her absolute favorite thing was when the grandkids and great grandkids would come over to visit. There would be a “chaos of kids”, food, and loud piano playing; and she loved every minute. She especially enjoyed the youngest, little Oliver, and wanted to hold him all the time. What stood out about mom was her selflessness as she always put others before herself. She loved unconditionally and sacrificially. She was the best mom, and her children were her life. She would have and often did give anything and everything for them. Her happiness was seeing them happy and doing well. My mom had a strong faith in God. This faith carried her through and sustained her throughout her life. It was in the most difficult times in her life that she would cling even harder to the Lord. She openly shared her faith, blessed those around her, and consistently expressed gratitude to the Lord. Ever hopeful, she lived by the words of her favorite scripture, Psalm 91, which she nearly knew by heart. If I could hope to inherit anything from her, it would be her love for others, her kindness, her goodness, her dedication to her family, and her faithfulness to our Lord. My mother passed away peacefully at our home in Hesperia, February 4, 2026. She was deeply loved by her family and friends; and will be greatly missed. She leaves behind 4 children and their spouses, 7 grandchildren and their spouses, 20 great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends. We praise our Lord she is resting in peace in His presence now, and give thanks for her life, and all the memories she leaves us. Lamentablemente, cuando tenía solo 2 años, su madre falleció. Su hermana, Carmela, que tenía apenas 13 años en ese momento, dejó la escuela para poder cuidar de mi mamá. Más tarde, cuando su hermana Carmela se casó, ella y su esposo la recibieron generosamente en su hogar. Más tarde, cuando su hermana Carmela se casó, ella y su esposo la recibieron generosamente en su hogar. Conoció a mi padre Rubén cuando ella entró a una cafetería donde él trabajaba, en Los Ángeles. Él se enamoró de ella a primera vista y le pidió que se encontraran más tarde en un baile. Ella aceptó y luego no se presentó. Como quiso el destino, volvería a encontrárselo. Sin aceptar un “no” por respuesta, él continuó insistiendo. ¡Su persistencia dio frutos! Se casaron el 27 de noviembre de 1958. Juntos, compraron una casa en La Puente, donde criaron a sus 4 hijos: Rubén Jr., Gabriel, Araceli y Víctor. Al establecerse en La Puente, se convirtieron en miembros activos de la comunidad—pasando incontables fines de semana en el parque donde mi papá entrenaba a los niños mientras se convertían en superestrellas de las Ligas Pequeñas. Mis padres fueron ambos dedicados servidores en su iglesia. Mi papá se convirtió en diácono, y mi mamá sirvió como maestra de CCD durante muchos años. A lo largo de esos años, su fe en el Señor y su comunidad de amigos creció. Su hogar se convirtió en una puerta giratoria de amigos y familiares que venían de visita, y cualquiera que llegaba no se iba sin haber comido. ¡Ella alimentaba a todos! A mi mamá le encantaba su trabajo como asistente bilingüe en la Escuela Primaria Nelson. Trabajó para el distrito durante 25 años, retirándose solo después de que la salud de mi papá comenzó a deteriorarse. Uno de sus recuerdos favoritos trabajando para el distrito fue enseñar a los estudiantes danzas de Ballet Folklórico para presentarlas en los festivales anuales del Cinco de Mayo de la escuela. Estas danzas más tarde se convertirían en una tradición en muchas de nuestras reuniones familiares, ya que ella se las enseñaba a los nietos y bisnietos. Después, los vestía y había un gran espectáculo. ¡Les encantaba! Los mejores días de mamá y papá los pasaban sentados juntos en la sala con la televisión encendida, viendo ganar a sus Dodgers. Su matrimonio resistió la prueba del tiempo, ya que pudieron celebrar 64 años de matrimonio antes de que mi papá falleciera en 2022. Para uno de sus cumpleaños, mi papá le escribió: “No te mueras antes que yo, no podría vivir sin ti. Eres el amor de mi vida”. Poco después de la muerte de mi papá, y debido al deterioro de su salud, ella vino a vivir conmigo y con mi esposo Jim, en Hesperia. Y aunque sabía que extrañaba su hogar en La Puente, siempre nos agradecía por cuidarla. Qué bendición fue tenerla con nosotros en sus últimos años. Estoy muy agradecida por ello y atesoraré todos esos recuerdos. Fue durante este tiempo que mi mamá se unió a nosotros en nuestro grupo de estudio bíblico en casa. Este fue un tiempo precioso en el que, juntos, nuestra fe continuó creciendo a medida que crecía nuestro conocimiento del Señor. En casa, ella leía la Biblia diariamente y escribía páginas y páginas de notas en preparación para nuestra siguiente reunión de estudio bíblico. Atesoro esas notas. Le encantaba ir a la iglesia, y la familia de la iglesia que la recibió desde el primer día que cruzó sus puertas. Su momento favorito de la semana era la convivencia con café y donas después de cada servicio, ¡pero especialmente las comidas compartidas! En casa, cada mañana comenzaba con una conversación telefónica con una de sus amigas más cercanas, Cuquita. Durante el día, disfrutaba sentarse afuera bajo la sombra de un árbol en su pequeño jardín, hablar por teléfono con su sobrina Licha, observar a las gallinas y recoger hojas. Pero lo que más le gustaba era cuando los nietos y bisnietos venían de visita. Había un “caos de niños”, comida y el sonido fuerte del piano; y ella disfrutaba cada minuto. Especialmente disfrutaba del más pequeño, el pequeño Oliver, y quería cargarlo todo el tiempo. Lo que destacaba de mamá era su altruismo, ya que siempre ponía a los demás antes que a sí misma. Amaba de manera incondicional y sacrificial. Fue la mejor mamá, y sus hijos eran su vida. Habría dado y muchas veces dio cualquier cosa y todo por ellos. Su felicidad era verlos felices y bien. Mi mamá tenía una fe fuerte en Dios. Esta fe la sostuvo y la acompañó a lo largo de su vida. Fue en los momentos más difíciles de su vida cuando se aferró aún más al Señor. Compartía abiertamente su fe, bendecía a quienes la rodeaban y expresaba constantemente gratitud al Señor. Siempre llena de esperanza, vivía según las palabras de su escritura favorita, el Salmo 91, que casi sabía de memoria. Si pudiera aspirar a heredar algo de ella, sería su amor por los demás, su bondad, su generosidad, su dedicación a su familia y su fidelidad a nuestro Señor. Mi madre falleció en paz en nuestro hogar en Hesperia el 4 de febrero de 2026. Fue profundamente amada por su familia y amigos; y será grandemente extrañada. Deja a 4 hijos y sus cónyuges, 7 nietos y sus cónyuges, 20 bisnietos, y numerosos otros familiares y amigos. Alabamos a nuestro Señor porque ahora descansa en paz en Su presencia, y damos gracias por su vida y por todos los recuerdos que nos deja.
