Gene Meyers

Gene Meyers 80, passed into Eternal life with his dear friend and caregiver Steve K. and Our Lord God, present at his side to carry him forward in reunion with family and friends who have gone before him. Gene was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 5th 1941, but moved West in his mid-twenties to become a lifelong resident of San Diego. Gene will be remembered as a good friend to many people and creatures, all of whom were with him in Spirit, as the choir of our prayers lifted Gene to high heaven. The list is long of his funny clever quips, known by friends and family as Genoism’s. He had unique thoughts and perspective on life, never failing to amuse us with his wit. Gene especially loved all animals and always carried peanuts and cat food to feed the local birds, critters and stray cats. He considered them his pets, making sure they were fed and loved. They loved him in return, following him daily for a kind word and a good meal. Gene served in the United States Army where he enjoyed his time in Germany as a US Soldier. After his military service, Gene became a lifelong Bartender of special events in and around Sea World. He loved his work entertaining people and creatures, being always respectful of the guests he served throughout his life. Gene loved the Lord, Jesus. He was a longtime member of the Sonrise Church and contributor to Life-Line Ministries, where he shared thoughtful Sunday memories with his favorite Pastor, Jim Hakes. Gene would often ask questions and be known to say, “I don’t know what it all means, but I know it’s important”. Gene was also a sports enthusiast; he followed all his favorite teams in the daily newspaper, his joy in every day was to read and study the stats and score spreads. He had so many friends as a Member of the American Legion #460, the VFW #3788 and the local Moose Lodge. There are too many friends to mention by name, but all share wonderful memories of events together, over more than 60 years. His favorite place to be each afternoon was parking his truck at the wall of the American Legion and the VFW, where he would greet friends while reading his daily newspaper, and pondering The Daily Bread, then join everyone inside for a happy hour toast to another blessed day of friendship. Gene is survived by his sister Sherrill Meyers-Nilsin of NY, two daughters, Missy (Jared) Apostolakes of MA and Kortney Schaaf of WA, 5 grandchildren, Tyler, Cassie, Britney, Taylor and Michael; 3 great-grandchildren Ashlynn, Kaiden and Joey. We have precious memories of this amazing man who gave us life. We will cherish our short time together forever, until we can join again in heaven hereafter. Gene was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Lois Meyers and his only son Michael Gene Meyers who, at the young age of 14, died while serving our country as a dedicated Boy Scout. Services will be held at Miramar Cemetery in San Diego, as well as a sea burial, per his request. Date and times will be noted in the future. Gene never wanted anyone to make a fuss about him, but naturally we all can’t help but remember him fondly, as we will share stories of his character for many years to come. A most special thank you to Steve K., also the nurses and care team, Pastor Gray from Art of Hospice, whose help, prayers and love, made Gene’s last month's comfortable, Grace filled and peaceful at home. Your care and kindness can only be repaid by our loving God to fill you with the holy Light you have given Gene and all who love him. God bless us in every prayer. In lieu of flowers, please share your memories and remember Gene when we see nature's wildlife, to offer a prayer of good will in dad’s honor. That will be his greatest delight, to hear you from heaven giving kind words to all the wildlife of God’s creatures.
